"I expect to pass through life but once. If, therefore, there be any kindness I can show, or any good thing I can do for any fellow being, let me do it now... as I shall not pass this way again."

(William Penn, 1644-1718 -- founder of Pennsylvania Colony; now the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania)

The Terence & Svea McKillen Foundation was incorporated in October 2010 as a private Canadian family philanthropic organisation. The Foundation's funding priorities are a reflection of the shared interests of the McKillen family. Motivated by the well known quotation of William Penn, the Foundation strives to play its part in the general welfare of our local and wider community, seeking to reflect the values and qualities held by its founders.

GOVERNANCE

The Board of Directors is comprised of family members who set policy and assure the Foundation's good governance. The Foundation makes grants only to "registered charities" in Canada or to "qualified donees" working overseas, within the meaning of the Income Tax Act, Canada. The Foundation does not give money to individuals.

GOALS

The Foundation's primary goals are to support fellow Canadians in creating more innovative, inclusive, caring, sustainable, and vibrant communities and encouraging all to contribute to the common good. The Foundation's Areas of Concern include the support of organisations working in the following areas:

  • Helping children or disadvantaged youth by intervening on their behalf as needed, in such ways as early childhood development/education, health/wellness programmes, social programmes, etc.
  • Music, especially musical training for disadvantaged children
  • Language deficits due to age-related problems or birth defects

The Foundation will continue to evolve and change as it refines its grants policy and goals and as the needs and strengths of society continue to change and is open therefore to considering support of other areas of community interest and action.
